Summary by Chris Dotson
A main point of The Romantic Imagination,
by Bowra, is that all of the well-known
Romantic authors considered their
imagination to be their ªmost precious
possessionº and that it had supernatural
origin. Some, on the other hand,
considered imagination to be a mark
of partial insanity (Pico is mentioned
here, as is a line from Shakespeare.)
However, the Romantics considered
that their imaginations reveal ªan
important kind of truth.º Bowra
talks a lot about how the Romantic
imagination was used to try to find
out truth in how the world works,
both in physical and metaphysical
terms.
