Subject: Call for Papers at Kalamazoo
REEDers and PERFORMers--
I hope some of you will be interested in the call for papers on The
Medieval Face: Art, Drama, Literature posted below. My colleague Susan
Yager and I are hoping to get papers from a variety of fields to make
our sessions truly cross- and inter-disciplinary. After reading the
call,if you have questions regarding the scope of the sessions or are in
doubt as to whether your subject might match our needs, you can reach my
voice mail at (515) 294-3013. Leave a message and I'll return your call
as soon as I can.
To those of you on both REED-L and PERFORM, I apologize for this
duplicate posting. :-)
Thanks for your attention,
Gloria Betcher
CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE THIRTY-SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MEDIEVAL
STUDIES--WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, KALAMAZOO, MI, 8-11 MAY 1997
***********************************************************************
2 SESSIONS ON
THE MEDIEVAL FACE: ART, DRAMA, LITERATURE
***********************************************************************
Medieval playwrights, artists, and writers used the face to reveal and
conceal aspects of character. The complexion, physiognomy, or
presentation of the face could indicate the subject's social or
spiritual standing. The face could also, however, deceive or dissemble.
We invite abstracts on all aspects of FACE IN THE MIDDLE AGES: color,
persona, masking, disguise, effigies and/or portraits, the symbolism of
features, the face in stagecraft, prosopopoeia, etc. To promote
interdisciplinarity and a variety of viewpoints, we encourage proposals
which approach the topic rhetorically, theoretically, iconographically,
or philologically.
Send abstract along with complete mailing address, e-mail, and phone/fax
numbers by Sept. 15 to:

Subject: Moors and Christians
Dear PERFORMers:
Here's another query for those of you interested in medieval Spain. Does
anybody know of any dramatized mock-battles (be they danced, fought on real
horses or hobby horses, or declaimed) between "Moors" and "Christians"
before 1525 other than the following?
1. Lleida/Lerida, 1150, at the wedding of Ramon Berenguer of Catalunya and
Peronella of Aragon (some mistakenly date this in 1137)
2. Zaragoza, July 25, c. 1300, at the court of Jaume II
3. Barcelona, 1424 onwards, a Corpus Christi pageant representing "the
martyrdom of Saint Sebastian with hobby horses" and Turks (I have references
from 1424, 1437, 1446, and 1467)
4. Naples, 1443, during the triumphal entry of Alfonso the Magnanimous
5. Igualada, 1450, a "danza de la Turquia," also with hobby horses
6. Jaen, 1462-5, several references to juegos de canas or other mock battles
in which one side dressed as Moors
7. Valencia, 1472, a dance (Amades does not cite his source for this
reference. Does anybody know the chronicle in which it is described?)
8. Gerona, 1493, a reenactment of the fall of Granada.
This is a surprisingly thin list, given the subsequent strength of the
tradition, but these are the only published references I can find. Does
anybody know of any others? (Some take line 1602 in the Poema del mio Cid to
be a reference to a moros y cristianos in Valencia in 1094, but I believe
this is a mistake, and local claims of a moros y cristianos in Alcoy in 1284
would appear to be based on a document concocted later).
Best wishes
Max Harris

Subject: "The Vice"
My colleague Mark Rose, who teaches English at UCSB, is compiling a
Shakespearean CD ROM. He's asked me to recommend a good visual depiction
of the character called "The Vice". I can't think of an authentic one,
offhand -- which either means that my memory has gone blank, or (more
likely, I hope) that we're up against the old problem of lack of visual
documentation for the English theatre in the 16th century (let alone the
14th and 15th).
If you can think of any good visuals of "The Vice", please send word of
them to Mark at HIS e mail address . Don't
send them to me, please; I have Vices enough as it is.

Subject: Looking for contemporary translation of the Play of the Sacrament
Hello All,
I rather new to this list, and so I'm not sure about all the rules of
appropriateness (netiquette if you will), etc. So, I hope my request falls
in line.
I'm looking for any sources for Modern English translations of the Croxton
_Play of the Sacrament_. My Middle English isn't up to par yet, and though
I can get the gist of the entire play, I miss out a lot on the specific
details. Since I am interested in Medieval religious drama as a
contemporary tool for ministry within the church, better precision than I
can give it is required (and besides, comparing the Middle English text I
have with a Modern English translation will certainly help develop my
translation skills.
Thanks,
Rob

Rob:
I assume you know of David Bevington's edition of the play in Bevington, ed.
_Medieval Drama_ (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1975), pp. 755-788. Although not
a translation, it does include translations of difficult words and phrases
in the margin and of entire sentences in the footnotes. This may be all you
need to grasp the details.
Best wishes,
Max Harris

Sacrament and Sacrilege in Medieval and Renaissance Drama
Organizer: Gerard NeCastro
Dept. of English, 304 Neville Hall, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469
gerard_necastro@voyager.umeres.maine.edu
This session will look at the imageries and liturgies of the
sacraments, especially in those cases in which the sacrament(s) is
(are) viewed irreverently. The emphasis on sacrilege should invite a
variety of approaches: historical, liturgical, theoretical,
theological and sociological. Though the topic immediately calls to
mind the comic reversal of carnival or the desecration of the
sacrament in the Croxton _Play of the Sacrament_, many other angles
and texts are possible

Theorizing the Records: Methodological Approaches to the
Production and Use of Edited Dramatic Extracts Organizer: James C.
Cummings School of English, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT,
England, UK engjcc@gps.leeds.ac.uk
This session has a two-fold aim. First, it will examine the
methodological questions raised in the process of producing an edition
of dramatic records (such as those of the REED project and the Malone
Society). Additionally, it will address the wider context of the ways
in which such an edition is used in research. This session is an
outgrowth of an online discussion which took place in the Spring of
1996 on the REED-L and PERFORM electronic mailing lists.

ACTER still has an opening for the week of Feb. 17-23, 1997 for the
production of *Romeo and Juliet*. We are very anxious to fill this week
and can offer a good discount for the week's performing/teaching
residency. I understand the Haworth Shakespeare company will not be
touring at the same time with a competing production of the same play, so
if your school, or any school you know of, has an opening for that week,
please reply to this message immediately. ACTER's complete fall schedule
for *Much Ado About Nothing* will be posted shortly.

Subject: Adam de la Halle Bibliography
I've just put a bibliography for Adam de la Halle on the web at:
http://www.byu.edu/~hurlbut/frmedrama/adam-h.html
It's still got a few typos and format problems which will be
repaired in the next week or two (let's call this a beta release).
I hope to complement this with additional bibliographies for French
Medieval Drama in the near future. Ultimately there will be a form
that will allow you to submit additions to the bibliography (as well
as brief annotations or reviews, if you think this is a good idea).
I'd like to make this resource as up-to-date as possible.
If anyone is interested in helping out with this project, feel free to send
me a note.

1997 Read-Tuckwell Lectures and Conference, 18-21 August 1997
********** MEDIEVAL FUTURES: LOOKING TO THE FUTURE, 1000-1500 **********
The Centre for Medieval Studies wishes to examine, in a broader approach,
the ways in which people in the Middle Ages viewed and prepared for the
future. This would encompass, for example, notions that were effectively
believed to be (or ought to be) permanent, and how people acted or planned
in accord with their perceptions. The desired effect of the papers is to
allow medievalists of various fields and approaches to view their own
research in new ways after participating in the conference.
