Greetings! I recently subscribed to this list. I have just enrolled
in a History of Dance course and am seeking suggestions on texts I
might read which would enhance my understanding of Medieval Dance.
Are there any that you might suggest for outside reading? I would
be grateful. I am seeking Medieval rather than Renaissance.

Thank you!

You might, for starters at least, take a look at the ubiquitous E.K.
Chambers' _Mediaeval Stage_ (2 volumes). He provides a rather
encyclopedic description of dance in the M.A....be sure to take a look at
any appendices that pertain to the subject. They can be terribly useful.

Good luck,

Although I haven't done much reading, have you gotten in touch which a local
chapter of the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) near you. I have learned
worlds of knowledge regarding medieval, ren., folk and various ethnic dances...

If you can't find an SCA chapter, let me know and I'll find one for
you!

H. I'm new to this list. Actually, _I_ am in the SCA, and I've already
forwarded Maureen's request to a friend of mine who researches
medieval dance for reenactments.

Maureen, the scholarly quality in the SCA is highly variable, ranging
the spectrum from history and archeology professors to party animals,
with everything in between. I've sent your request to an expert;
but, if you need a set of dancers quick, you could get lucky with your
local SCA group.

Other possibilities would include Richard Axton, "Popular Modes in the earliest
plays," in _Medieval Drama_, ed. Neville Denny (1973); Richard Axton,
_European Drama of the Early Middle Ages_ (1974), pp. 47-61; Josepj
Bedier, "Les plus anciennes danses francaises," _Revue des Deux Mondes_
31 (1901), 398-424. Richard Rastall has compiled a very useful list of
dance rubrics in early English drama. He might be a good person to contact
for more leads.

Thank you for your suggestion. I do know a few people in the local
group but they are not historians in the sense of what I require. I
need published sources that I can review and use in a paper. I
appreciate your correspondence. If you should come across any
publications on the topic, I would be grateful to know of them.
There simply is not a lot out there that I have found so far. Many

I'm helping to set up a commedia del arte troupe. This troupe will
exist in the context of a 16th century historical reenactment,
the SCA, renn fairs, etc.

I'm looking for materials that help pin down the day-to-day
dealings of such a troupe in the time range of 1550-1603.

I'm also looking for materials that give pragmatic advice for
performing in such a venue, such as films of performances,
actors's and directors' guides to c d'a, a good book
on improvisation, etc.

Costume info would be nice, too.

Thanks.

Greetings!

I found this list on the WWW page for the SCA (society for creative
anachronism).

I am at the beginning stages of forming an amateur Commedia dell'Arte troop
here in Montreal, Quebec, and I'm looking for folks who have some experience
in putting together a troop, and performing commedia.

My intentions for this group is to get the folks in the local SCA group
interested in Rennaisance theatre, and (hopefully) to get a good enough
ensemble together to perform at various SCA events.

Despite the odd Mystery Play, I haven't done any theatre in about 10 years -
since High School, where I majored in Theatre. So I'm wide open to ideas,
suggestions, and help from anyone who cares to offer some.

Hi Justin!

Thanks for the contact, someone with experience to talk to would
be a gift from God.

re their troops "compromise", what I've read so far indicates
that they actually used women in the women's roles. The exclusive
use of male actors seems to be an English point of style.

Hmm. Seems I've struck a spark. So far, I've gotten as many
"me too" responses as I have "here's a source".

I'm also surprised at how many SCAdians are on this list, tho
I suppose I shouldn't be.

I'll repost a summary of sources once it stops trickling in.

More about commedia:

How specific does one want to be regarding commedia? I can't help you at all=
on the Italians, but the influx of italian elements in your time period=
(1550-1600) is clear in Nuremberg theater. Are you also perhaps interested=
in the style of the English comedians?

Nuremberg, by the way, seems also to have argreed with the English on the=
gendering of actors. I'm curious about the makeup of your troupe.

Wow - seems I'm not the only one in this boat!

Some interesting sources that I've found so far:

Anything by Viola Spolin, specifically, "Improvisation for the Theater" is
good for group exercises to promote improvisational style and group dynamics.
Also, a very good book, called "Commedia dell'Arte: An Actor's Handbook" by
John Rudlin.

A friend of mine who does theatre professionally suggested Charlie Chaplin
videos and films of Vaudeville to get ideas.

What I'm really looking for though is connexions in my area (Montreal), or
people who have performed Commedia to give me direct advice on starting a
troop.
