ANNOUNCING
THE 8TH INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM
SOCIETE INTERNATIONALE POUR L'ETUDE DU THEATRE MEDIEVAL
Victoria College, U. of Toronto
August 2-9 1995
The week-long colloquium features over 75 panel and plenary
presentations by scholars from Europe, North America, Australia,
South Africa and the Caribbean on the topics "The Actor in Early
Theatre", "Towards a Definition of the Morality Genre", "Carnival",
"Survivals of Early Theatre in North America" and "Sponsorhip and
Control: the Sociological Context of Early Theatre". There will be
a special session devoted to the Caribana Festival -- the
"carnival" of Toronto's West Indian community that will be taking
place while the colloquium is in session. Workshops on acting early
theatre, building costumes and mask-making will be held. Live
performances of early theatre will take place each day by troupes
from Europe, North America and South Africa including a new
Quebecois version of Maitre Pathelin (Maitre Petelin) and the
Nativity sequence from the York Cycle performed on wagons. Three
excursions --- to the site of a seventeenth century French mission,
Ste Marie among the Hurons; to the Old Order Mennonite Country and
the Stratford Festival; and to Niagara Falls --- are optional in
the program.
