(c) A six-toothed wheel, 20 mm in diameter, surmounted by a stalk bearing three
five-petalled flowers; 54 mm long over-all, fixed to chain-lines 30 mm apart.

(d) A six-toothed wheel, 19 mm in diameter.  The mark incorporates a
'starting-handle', three flowers and two initials; 57 mm long over-all, fixed

stanzas XIV and XV there is the heading: 'Response faicte par maistre Alain
chartier Au dieu d'amours en soy excusant de ce qu'il l'accusoit avoir escript
et fait livres nouveaux contre ses droiz.'

The imitations of the <i>Belle Dame sans Mercy</i> in <i>Pd</i> were listed by
Piaget.  <i>Pd</i> was discussed by Kussmann in his study of the textual
tradition of the <i>Livre des Quatre Dames</i>.  The manuscript was mentioned
by Champion, and was included in the bibliographies of the <i>Debat des Deux
Fortun&eacute;s d'Amours</i>, the <i>Belle Dame sans Mercy</i>, and the
<i>Breviaire des Nobles</i>.  It was consulted by J. E. White when he edited
the poetical works, and used by F. Rouy in his edition of the <i>Livre de
l'Esperance</i>.
The texts of the <i>Excusacion</i> and the <i>Lay de Paix</i> in <i>Pd</i> are
contaminated: the first contains an additional stanza, the second an extra
line.  <i>Pd</i> includes three of the four poems edited and their texts have
some connection with those in the first collected edition, <i>Xa</i>, and with
related manuscripts such as <i>Pa</i> and <i>Pk</i>.  The three texts which
were examined contain a number of individual readings and some irregular lines.
